What is time off in lieu?

Your HR Glossary questions, answered

what is time off in lieu

Time off in lieu (TOIL) is when an employee receives additional paid time off work to compensate for any extra time they have worked beyond their normal contracted working hours.

For example, during a busy period, an employee may work an extra 7.5 hours in a week, which would equate to one full day of paid leave being given back to them. This flexible arrangement can help employees with their work-life balance, as well as help organisations keep their business costs down (as paying overtime wages instead of providing TOIL would likely be more expensive).
