Additional information
Annual leave
All workers are entitled to 10 days’ leave each calendar year, though this statutory right does not extend to tea plantation workers. Tea plantation workers get one day’s paid annual leave per 22 days of work. There are other specific rules for certain roles and industries. Employees who work in the road transport service industry and employees who work in shops, industrial establishments, commercial establishments, and factories get one day’s paid annual leave per 18 days of work. Newspaper workers get one day’s paid annual leave per 11 days of work.
Sick leave
In Bangladesh, employees are entitled to 14 days of paid sick leave per year. To qualify for sick leave, employees must provide a medical certificate for any absences. Sick leave is non-transferable and must be used within the year.
Maternity and paternity leave
A pregnant employee in Bangladesh is entitled to 16 weeks of paid maternity leave. These 16 weeks may be taken: 8 weeks of maternity leave before the expected delivery date; 8 weeks after the birth of a child. Bangladesh does not have a formal policy or law on paternity leave, so workers must rely on their employers to provide time off. Some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) offer one month of paid paternity leave to their male employees, while other private organizations may only provide three days.
