What is annual leave in the UK?

Your HR Glossary questions, answered

unlimited annual leave

Annual leave in the UK is an entitlement that employees receive to take time off from work. It is legally protected paid time off, with most UK workers entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks per year, or 28 days (for full-time workers). This is calculated as: number of days worked x 5.6. For part-time workers, holiday entitlement is calculated on a pro-rata basis, e.g. 3 days per week x 5.6 = 16.8 days.

The minimum UK entitlement includes bank holidays (of which there are eight per year), but employers can choose whether or not these are taken as leave or worked. Many employers choose to offer more than minimum annual leave entitlement, as a way of supporting their employees’ wellbeing and attracting and retaining talent.
