What is an absence rate?
Your HR Glossary questions, answered
An absence rate is a percentage that show the proportion of working time lost due to employee sickness or other types of absence over a set period.
It is calculated using the formula: Absence Rate = (Number of Absences / Number of Available Workdays in the Period) x 100. For example, if an employee is absent for 5 days out of a 20-day work period, the absence rate would be (5 / 20) x 100 = 25%.
